ImpBoot is something I came up with a year too late – but I hope it might help someone. While I was at school, I often needed to turn on my computer remotely in order to send it MATLAB scripts. Wake-on-LAN (WOL) was not feasible as my router was in another room, and I could not get Wake on Wireless LAN (WoWLAN) to work with my desktop’s hardware.
Electric Imp is an SD-card-sized system that provides WiFi connection to just about any piece of hardware (with some mods, of course). With an Electric Imp, a resistor, and a transistor, I created a software-controlled switch. By connecting the switch to the POWER SW header on the motherboard of my desktop, I could turn my computer ON and OFF over the Internet.
I created a full tutorial on making the impBoot on Instructables: http://www.instructables.com/id/impBoot-Remotely-Turn-on-a-Desktop-Computer/
